Roku Lesson 20 Types of Monetisation on Roku/Fire TV
Lesson 20: Types of Monetisation on Roku/Fire TV
If you’ve built a channel using TVBoss, Direct Publisher, or even a manual feed setup — but you’re still not earning money — this lesson is for you.
Many users hit a wall after launching their first channel because:
- They’re paying to host videos
- They get no views or ad revenue
- They don’t know how to enable monetisation
Let’s break down how to monetise Roku and Fire TV channels the right way.
1️⃣ Monetisation Types at a Glance
| Monetisation Type | How It Works | Requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Pre‑roll / Mid‑roll / Post‑roll Ads | Short video ads inserted before, during, or after your main videos. You earn per 1,000 views (CPM). | Connect your feed to Roku Ads or a VAST ad network (e.g. SpotX, SpringServe). |
| Banner Ads / Overlays | Small banners shown while video plays. Often powered by the ad server. | Requires integration with an ad platform or overlay engine. |
| Sponsorship | You mention or showcase a sponsor in your video. You get paid directly. | Arrange your own sponsor deals. No ad network needed. |
| Affiliate Promotions | You place QR codes or URLs in your videos. Viewers scan and buy; you earn commissions. | Affiliate account + ability to edit video overlays or descriptions. |
| Subscription / Paywall | Viewers pay to access your channel or premium content. | Requires Roku Pay setup or integration with a third-party paywall. |
2️⃣ Why TVBoss Didn’t Help with Monetisation
TVBoss was primarily built to submit and build channels, not monetise them. Unless you manually added ad tags or connected to an ad network, your videos ran without revenue — leaving you stuck paying for hosting without earning anything back.
This is common with “DFY” tools — they make the setup easy, but leave monetisation to you.
3️⃣ How to Actually Add Ads (The Right Way)
Option A: Roku Direct Publisher Ads
- Use Roku’s built-in ad system (requires a JSON feed).
- Ads are automatically inserted, and you earn a share of the revenue.
- Note: You typically need 100+ hours of content + traffic for ad fill to begin.
Option B: Use a VAST Ad Network
- Join a network like SpotX, SpringServe, or Broadpeak.
- Get your VAST tag URL from the ad provider.
- Edit your feed (MRSS or JSON) to include ad breaks pointing to this tag.
Option C: DIY Sponsorship / Affiliate Ads
- Film short sponsor clips and embed them into your videos.
- Use tools like Canva or Kapwing to add QR codes linking to affiliate products.
- No platform permission needed — you control it.
4️⃣ Step-by-Step Implementation
- Check your feed type (JSON or MRSS)
- Choose an ad method: Roku Ads, VAST Network, or DIY QR codes
- Insert ad breaks: Add ad tags in your feed (I’ll show you how soon)
- Apply for a network or embed QR/sponsor promos now
- Monitor results and optimise over time
5️⃣ Next Step: Get You Set Up
In the next lesson, I’ll show you how to:
- Insert ads into your actual feed
- Apply for ad networks
- Use overlays or sponsor messages while you’re waiting for traffic
This is where the real money starts. Even with small audiences, affiliate or sponsor monetisation can pay off fast — especially in the right niches.
We’ll build this together. One line of code at a time.
