HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE
High blood pressure (hypertension), is probably the bodily function that commands the greatest attention and fears of the public. It is also probably the least understood. High arterial pressure (high blood pressure) refers to the circulation of blood from the left side to the heart and pressure in arteries leading to the brain, arm and leg.
According to what the person is doing determines what the systolic (top) reading and diastolic (bottom) reading is when taking the blood pressure. Belief is that the normal reading in a healthy body is 120/70, but as explained, readings vary in the individual during the course of 24 hours.
Normal blood pressure tends to rise with age, a person’s age plus 100 is the average systolic (top) reading and as far as is known, systolic readings of 150 or less does no harm. The average diastolic (bottom) reading that causes no concern is 95 or less. Anything above these readings gives rise to concern proportionally to the height of pressure over and above. It is harmful pressure that chiefly affects the heart and arteries. It is when both systolic and diastolic pressures are up that doctors diagnose high blood pressure. When the diastolic pressure is over 110 it requires treatment and may also require treatment if it is persistently over 100.
FACTS ABOUT HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE
It is a fact that when the blood pressure is normal, life expectancy increases, whereas, the higher the blood pressure, the less is the expectation of life. When the diagnose is high blood pressure treatment to reduce it must begin immediately in case complications arise. Due to the risk of coronary disease the affected patient should not smoke and avoid over-eating (putting on weight). The patient should also take regular exercise as this brings down the blood pressure which according to insurance statistics, a person that has low blood pressure tends to have and unusually long life expectancy.
